about

London-based Coex (real name Cormac Crehan) shares new single ‘Waster’ – a beautifully choreographed fistfight between doom-laden synths, high octane drums and guitars that line up together to box your head in. The fierce pent-up energy recalls Young Fathers at their rowdiest, while the carefully balanced incongruity sidles into Mica Levi territory.

“The song was written when I was finding London city life quite claustrophobic,” explains Cormac. “So, a lot of the song is capturing that feeling, and as it develops there’s a strong sense of escapism. I had a sense of wanting to get away, and for me that sense of angst and agitation is translated into this bottled-up energy, combined with a feeling of yearning, and that’s really what this song tries to encapsulate.”

There’s a whole raft of new Coex material in the pipeline, but please don’t expect any consistency in the musical direction, he operates in almost polar opposition to those ideals: “I tend to make music that just encapsulates what I am feeling in that moment as best I can. Being quite an intensely temperamental person, this tends to change quite dramatically from song to song.”

Coex has been selected to participate in Brownswood/Gilles Peterson's Future Bubblers grass roots artist development programme 2022-23.

lyrics

All this spacing around,
It's all so packed,
All the places are loud,
No looking back,
All the faces to yearn,
Just sending me Higher,
All the twisters and turns,
More space in the fire

We could starts somewhere else in the sky,
I'm a waster now,
Somewhere farther afield,
More places to lye,
Because it's always realest in the clouds,
It's all coming back to me,
I don't really know how,
Reaching the start
